Isn't that unusually drastic? She was diagnosed pretty early, wasn't she?
If she has a history of it in her family, or it was a particularly aggressive form, then she may have been advised to go for complete removal. Drastic perhaps, but there's no point risking treatment which may not work and thus allowing it to spread in the meantime.
