So (last) stew?

😁 Asked at the Coop this morning, for some ready made pancakes on my usual daily run for my wife's newspaper , but they had sold out early!

So, not daunted, and in my newly found (forced) need to cook, I remembered I had some plain flour (3 years out of date, but no weevils fortunately!), eggs, milk and oil (all current) so have made some batter via a BBC "simple" recipe and will be cooking some tonight for eating after the lamb casserole, which has all worked out well, as it advises that you leave the batter to stand before cooking.

I might try roast swan next

As I recall from my Dandy & Beano reading days, the problem with making your own pancakes is having to scrape them off the ceiling post-tossing.

My first attempt at pancakes was a roaring success, going much smoother than I anticipated, so no more ready made ones for me! 😉

And I gave up tossing many years ago

I can't believe that.

I just made myself my (first) stew. Dumplings not quite done and the beef was a bit overdone.

An improvement tonight with some baked beans and a lot more gravy.

I'm preparing for Trump's inevitable tariffs on the UK by making my own brown sauce. HP already costs $6 for a 9-ounce bottle at my local shop.

Also making some homemade rusk, since that can't be found here. I'll use part of it to make some Lorne sausage, and the remaining pork and rusk will go into a few pounds of homemade bangers.

Mouth is watering, you can't beat HP sauce with sausages

Well I've been using own brand brown sauces for years now because they're much cheaper and just as good imo. Best is Aldi's at 75p, 20p cheaper than Sainsbury's own brand which is also very good and use just as much. Tried HP just once since then and never went back, as it's way more expensive for no great reason, and I found it much harder to squeeze out the bottle. 🟫

Brown sauce is impossible to find here, with the exception of a few stores that carry HP in their import section. It's probably 2-3 times as expensive as it is in the UK.

I've been making a lot of my own condiments lately, since they tend to taste much better than the commercial stuff. I've made BBQ sauce, Bavarian mustard, and currywurst sauce in recent weeks.

Hmm, it's the shipping costs. I can't think why our big food co.s can't licence out the manufacture to you, just like your Heinz and Coke are here, among others. 🤔

They could and would, but brown sauce is essentially unknown here. I'm sure they sell 10,000 bottles or more of ketchup for every bottle of HP that is imported. We should do a cultural exchange: convince Americans to try brown sauce and we can get you all eating ranch dressing. God knows that the young American kids put it on everything these days. Sounds like a job for some "influencers".

I had some of this on hand, so whipped up a grilled cheese on sourdough sandwich: https://www.barbers.co.uk/products/barber-s-1833-vintage-reserve-cheddar

It's going down nicely with a can of this: https://foundersbrewing.com/our-beer/centennial-ipa/

HP Sauce is not even made in England anymore.
It's made in Holland after it was bought out by Heinz

Which is owned by Kraft, the US company, so it shouldn't take much to supply HP in The States
