TRAINING OPPORTUNITY
Title: Trainee Script Editors
Department: BBC writersroom and Screen Yorkshire
Contract: 2 days training in Leeds on Monday 26th & Tuesday 27th November 2007, followed by the opportunity to apply for 3 months work based learning on a Yorkshire based drama.

Please check that you are available on these dates as attendance at the training is compulsory for anyone wishing to apply for a placement.

AIMS OF THE JOB
We are looking for candidates with some experience as script readers, writers or in production, who are keen to further develop their script editing skills with the aim of developing a career as a script editor in television drama production.

We are offering a BBC professional script-editing workshop for up to 8 candidates. Following the training, there will be an opportunity for selected candidates to apply for work based learning placements as trainee script editors on a Yorkshire production.

This opportunity is open to those living and working in the Yorkshire area only.
TRAINING OBJECTIVES
This opportunity is intended for candidates who wish to extend their understanding of the script editor’s role and to develop their skills in this area. The course will focus on the relationship between the script editor and the writer, which is central to the development of every script.

Course objectives:
In depth exploration of the role of the script editor and the main responsibilities at each stage of development and production

Consolidation of existing skills, with advice on technical and interpersonal aspects of the role
Practical illustration of the relationship between script editor, writer and producer
Development of basic knowledge of narrative structure, characterisation and key storyline elements
Interactive demonstration of how to compile and present notes on a draft
One-on-one script meeting with guest writers
The course will be led by Valery Ryan, a freelance script & development executive, whose credits include Prime Suspect, Cracker, The Ambassador, The Roman Mysteries, Two Thousand Acres of Sky, Ella and the Mothers, 55 Degrees North and Warriors.

KEY SKILLS REQUIRED

Demonstrable writing and/or script reading experience and the ability to demonstrate sound editorial judgement and sensitivity in feedback to writers
Strong editorial instincts and the ability to communicate opinions in a tactful and effective way
A commitment to working in regional television drama
A willingness to be flexible in terms of the hours involved
