I'm not trying to be perverse by picking none of the really big artists, but they are all albums I can listen to all the way through and enjoy (nearly) every track.

70s: Quadrophenia - The Who
80s: Nothing's Shocking - Jane's Addiction
90s: Lost Somewhere Between the Earth and My Home - The Geraldine Fibbers
00s: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco

How do you mean you've picked none of the real artists?

70s - Harvest - Neil Young (runner up Cat Stevens' Greatest Hits, 1975)
I am not aware of any music after the 1970s.

I know you love Wilco but I don't think I've heard anything by them. And I've never heard of the Geraldine Fibbers.
I love the 2 Who albums though.
What I'm really doing is asking for recommendations.

Wilco are quite possibly the best American band in existence - especially in a live setting. Their albums are uniformly good, with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot considered their masterpiece. Summerteeth and Being There are also standouts.
The Geraldine Fibbers only released two studio albums in the 90s, but they left a mark on anyone who heard them. There's a Wilco connection, too - Wilco guitarist Nels Cline played on the final Fibbers album.
Dig into both bands' catalogs, and try to catch a Wilco show - you won't be disappointed.
60's. very tough. narrowed down to Highway 61 re-visited or Blonde on Blonde.
70's almost impossible but I'll go for Before and after Science by Eno.
80's comparatively easy,which Fall album? Hex Enduction Hour. I think
I'm sure there was music before the 90's, I can't think of much I listen to regularly.
90s - Mercury Rev - Deserters Songs
00s - The Killers - Hot Fuss
10s - Lana Del Rey - Born to Die
20s - Wolf Alice - Blue Weekend
90's very tough again. Lots to choose from.Loveless .MBV.
90s are very tough. I'd happily go with Chapper's Pulp choice, or Pixies Bossonova or Nirvana's Nevermind.
