Vintage adverts Page 70

This advert used to scare the life out of me (I think I might have posted this before)

Yes, agree with fasty - you've lost me there. 1/2d = One shilling and 2 pence. c. 7p in decimal money. Where do you see 14 pence?

And the quarter pound box is 7d (seven pence) c. 3p in decimal

It clearly says it if you read the advert.

"Only 14 pence for a half pound box."

Must admit I was paying more attention to the banner than the text.

But nobody said 14 pence until the metrics came along, it was one and tuppence.

Ah yes, I see what you mean now, and like fasty I didn't read the text either, and yes you are right, that is very odd. I don't remember anyone ever saying that, and again, as fasty says, it wasn't until decimalisation that coinage was referred to in that way.

I withdraw my thinking you were losing the plot 😁

Yeh, that's right: There's 12 old pence in a shilling, so one shilling plus 2 pence is 14 pence.

1939..........Umm scrummy, can I have some more Mum?

I'm on my hols in the Lake District at the moment and went to Grasmere, famous for its gingerbread shop, yesterday and there is a delicious pervading aroma of ginger in the air in the vicinity.

I had the Halifax.

If I remember right it was 5/6d

Five and Six

Not 66 pence ;)

27½p, which seems ridiculous now

On the other hand, I seem to recall that it was quite common to mention that a pound was 240 pence.

Anyway, that was an ADVERT making a point, which might well have been obscure.
