"Dear Mum, immediately upon our return from the church, I was presented with a giant, breathtaking package. But not the one I was expecting."

What a lovely thoughtful present.

The ad is from the 1970s I think, and might well have been captioned "As a woman driver, in a manual car I don't know reverse from my elbow. That's why I love my Mini Automatic. It does all the gear-changing for me . . . although I still have to be there, of course."

Don't you just love the 1970s?

Boiled rabbit and stewed tripe. That's the name of me tea then.

?

Is that for you, or your whippets?

Don't know why you'd boil a rabbit?
Sautéed, stewed or roast, surely?

You've not seen Fatal Attraction then? (You probably have.)

You do realise that although these were pre-enlightened times socio-politically, the ads were very tongue in cheek? (You probably do.)

I think it maybe to do with the quality of meat in earlier times - "Boiled Beef and carrots"?

And I quote, from t'internet :-

Why did people boil meat?

Traditionally, cheaper cuts of meat were used; boiling makes the meat more tender than roasting. It was usually cooked with onions and served with carrots and boiled potatoes. It was not uncommon for the beef to be salted in a brine for a few days, then soaked overnight to remove excess salt before it was boiled.

. . . and that, M'Lud, is the case for the defence.

I know for a fact the Addids one was absolutely serious - no irony.
The Mini one is a 'joke'- but not an ironic one - just playing off the dumb blonde trope.

Adverts like this are enough to give anybody the hump.
