Always listen to something before you decide it's crap. Some people don't and they are known as "Music nazis" - that group of idiots that read Q, sit in the pub wearing band tees and wristbands, and laugh at your jukebox selections before talking discussing some coma inducing topic along the lines of why post punk is so commercial, what went wrong with britpop, and the 467 reasons why Lennon was better than McCartney. These are people who need a James Blunt CD violently inserted into a painful area.

But at the same time, if someone has taken the time to listen to an artist and has said "Rubbish", then that person should get respect because at least they are deciding that based on their own taste and not on what NME tells them to like.

I'm not a fan of Eminem. I think he is a bit of a fudge stick but I did listen to his choons before deciding so!

Cool

Sorry.......MN's drive me mental!

I find myself shouting "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD JUST LIKE A TUNE FOR THE BEAT YOU STUCK UP ARSE BISCUITS!!!"......and getting shocked looks.

Yeah, but the beat is annoying too.

should we file rap/hip-hop under "Music" at all?

*cradles his upside-down cross in his hands and stares menacingly at the world*

That livened things up didn't it!

P.S. Does this have something to do with a certain radio bound Paul Merton this morning?

It might've done.

It just reminded me. Why do people have to steal music to put in their own songs though? Is it because they're creatively inept?

By the way I like Fatboy Slim!

LOL

Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique" & De La Soul's "3ft High & Rising" are peices of hiphop and sampling magnificence.

Ah, I love the Beastie Boys.

Okay, I had to go out earlier on, so I only went to youtube about half an hour ago. Here's a few videos off the top of my head, which, if anything, will at least make you realise that there is more to Hip hop, than the stuff you see on MTV, and hear on Radio 1. Some of the songs don't have a proper video, but you can still appreciate them. By the way, as with most Hip hop, it sounds better through headphones, as they allow basslines to be better appreciated.

First, I thought I'd start with something to wake you up, in case you were dropping off to sleep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiqnC4BgIkg

This next song is written from the perspective of a soldier in Vietnam. The lyrics of the second bloke who raps are particularly poignant, as he writes from the perspective of his own Father, who actually fought in Vietnam. While he was there, he was exposed to the infamous "Agent Orange" gas, and as a cosequence, two of his children were born handicapped: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r0KpWMNxnM

Next is a guy called Mac Lethal, performing a song about his messed up childhood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufBjaN1Q0Bw

This next video is an old favourite of mine,by a group called The Goats. It's from back in 1993, when even good stuff was played on MTV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OslVwbS4fzc

Finally, a song by a young group called Blue scholars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmZrd4KyVcw

As I said - what is the point?

I love NWA so here's some :) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkPb4s0-QcI

Plus NWA are responsible for one of my favourite lines ever...

Lovey "To a kid looking up to me - life ain't nothing but bitches and money" Lovey

Cool

And heres just a funny song (only if you're not too easily offended) Eminem - Kill You - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTTfnZhi8xU

You mean, what is the point in us casting our hip hop pearls before a swine? ;)

You have closed your mind to a musical style you don't like..

Welcome to a very big club, most people have done the very same thing with a type of music they don't like.. from Opera to Cajun to Jazz to Pop to anything you care to mention and they've dismissed it as 'crap'..

Hey ho, people do that, who cares.. ;)

Let's just enjoy our music!! (and you David!)

to be honest i feel that way about all music. i can listen to a music once or twice but then it bores me rigid after that. that's why i like the radio - i hear songs that i've not heard before - or ones that i've not heard for ages. bbc 6music is good for that. the presenters tend to be good as well.
i once tried to listen to an eminem cd but i turned it off quite quickly.

I started with De La Soul and I also like Eminem, Tupac and 50 cent plus a lot of stuff I hear, but just don't know the names of.

I find that strange as music has been my life, well a huge part of it anyway. But it takes all sorts.

Btw how is your 'Compendium of Car Registration plates' coming on? ;)
