I expect we'll get a rewrite of the caption.........................

I swear on my life I hadn't even thought about touching this one . . . until you mentioned it.

Here's a lovely old card. It didn't have a caption so I added one of my own.

Or: I'm that fat, I can't get out of the deckchair and the tides coming in.

Or: I'm that fat, I can't get out of the deckchair and the tides coming in.

That's very funny.
It could be seen as offensive and 'fattist' these days but what saves it (for me at least) and what makes it funny rather than offensive is the fact that the woman herself is obviously happy (even joyful) about the situation and if she thinks it's hilarious, it's okay for us to laugh too.
I love it.

Surely, she's jolly because she's on holiday, doing her favourite things and having not a care in the world, which says it all and why there are no words. Her beaming face would have made 1950s (pre-war?) holiday makers happy too.

Sticking a tag line with it, makes it slightly offensive, if you like, but the original was never meant to be like that - you have made it so, and then, put a modern interpretation on it.

It's like taking say, a Max Miller, Bob Monkhouse or Ken Dodd joke and "improving" it. Those comedians didn't just dream up the joke and rattled it off, it was honed to perfection, so no other words were required, and the same goes for these seaside postcards.

Good afternoon.........................

Hello Herc,
I'm not trying to improve anything. If I could draw, I'd draw my own cartoons and add my own captions but I can't draw because I have absolutely no talent for drawing.
I'm useless as an artist but I can sometimes think up a funny caption for an existing cartoon. It might not be better than the original caption but it doesn't have to be, does it? As long as it's at least a little bit funny in its own right?
I don't see what harm I'm doing but I'm quite prepared to stop if it means that much to you.

Guys, let's all calm down. They're just funny cartoons. (Well, mostly. ;)) Some people (mostly Hercules) are posting some great art, some with gags better than others, and other people are discussing them and thinking about possible alternatives. It's really nothing to get worked up about. We're all enjoying looking over them and considering both the pictures themselves and the captions.

Guys, let's all calm down.

I don't think anyone is getting over excited, Aaron.

The original card didn't have a caption and totally deserves to exist in its own right. This is my modern twist on it.

You're getting a bit sinister now...

This is my modern twist on it.

But why. Another good card about having a jolly time on holiday, which it was intended to depict and you've tainted it with a modern crime.

Sorry, but you've lost me.

Original drawing with original caption.

Same drawing with dialogue changed simply to reflect my own sense of humour.
