When I was in junior school, there was a kid there who used to sit next to me and always turned up late. Every day he would have a new excuse so that it started with he couldn't find his satchel and became things like he had been struck by a lump of rock from space outside the gates. He also regularly said things like "my Dad went off to Jupiter today".
Over the years, you learn that it can be a key part of humour. In fact, at the time every one but the teachers would laugh. But the difference was that he didn't laugh and totally believed what he said. Where is he now? As it happens, a highly responsible job managing a large residential establishment which looks after drug addicts. I mention this because in this age of virtual reality and games for fantasists everyone in charge is like that now. Scientists. Politicians. You name it.
Consequently, I don't believe a word that any of them says. It is best to have the attitude "oh is that right dear?" with an accompanying tone of derision which they wouldn't be able to comprehend any way. They will go "oh, yes, yes". Then you can go "oh good for you love" and forget about it by going into the garden to plant some runner beans. They will diagnose you with something they have also invented like 1970s Mind Syndrome or Doesntownaphonyitis-20 but what the heck.
