Coronavirus Page 42

Official figures suggest that the death rate among coronavirus victims in the UK is around 13%.

However, experts say that figure is grossly misleading because we're only testing the most severely ill patients.

They suggest that the actual mortality rate is probably around 0.18%, as appears to be the case in Los Angeles with similar figures reported in Finland and Germany.

That means that instead of 13 deaths per hundred infected people, the true death rate is fewer than two deaths per THOUSAND infected people.

I didn't say I believed it (I believe very little of what I'm being fed). That's why I specifically said "one of the reasons given..."

Of course, the "delay" to implementing "lockdown", to which you object, may have been because of the resistance being threatened from some quarters. Like from this person for example:

Why do people keep taking me seriously? Nicola is my heroine. She's bloody brilliant compared to lazy arse Johnson.

Smurfs' death toll up by joplysplot percent to croptysnip.

Surviving Smurfs bickering fiercely over the duration of the Smurfdown and Smurfberry juice rationing.

The resistance was all from within the Tory government.
The delay was as long as it was because that's how long they managed to get away without implementing it.
It was public pressure, not some fantasy desire to 'control' the populace, that drove the decision.
Everyone saw the insanity of Cheltenham, of Crufts , of all those stupid international football matches.
"Close the f**king schools!" became a national anthem.
And, of course, if they'd implemented when they should have done, the peak would have been a fortnight ago (at least), it would have been lower and the end of lockdown would be a good deal closer.
And, needless to say, thousands less bereaved families.
Sadly they had one eye on the stock-market, one eye on their party's performance figures.
Leaving precisely no eyes for the health of the nation.
Still, you get what you vote for.

I'm sure Briosaid will be delighted to be considered "within the Tory government"!

You're deflecting, BB.
Briosaid was quite patently being ironic (as you well know).
If, however, you genuinely didn't spot that, then one might be forced to undertake a wholesale re-evaluation of your ability to grasp the current situation

When I was in junior school, there was a kid there who used to sit next to me and always turned up late. Every day he would have a new excuse so that it started with he couldn't find his satchel and became things like he had been struck by a lump of rock from space outside the gates. He also regularly said things like "my Dad went off to Jupiter today".

Over the years, you learn that it can be a key part of humour. In fact, at the time every one but the teachers would laugh. But the difference was that he didn't laugh and totally believed what he said. Where is he now? As it happens, a highly responsible job managing a large residential establishment which looks after drug addicts. I mention this because in this age of virtual reality and games for fantasists everyone in charge is like that now. Scientists. Politicians. You name it.

Consequently, I don't believe a word that any of them says. It is best to have the attitude "oh is that right dear?" with an accompanying tone of derision which they wouldn't be able to comprehend any way. They will go "oh, yes, yes". Then you can go "oh good for you love" and forget about it by going into the garden to plant some runner beans. They will diagnose you with something they have also invented like 1970s Mind Syndrome or Doesntownaphonyitis-20 but what the heck.

The UK announces 616 more coronavirus hospital deaths taking the death toll to 18,738.

By all means, let's abandon lockdown restrictions now that the daily death rate is decreasing.

Also, the next time you go parachuting, here's what you should do:

Jump out of the plane, count to 10 and pull your ripcord.

The parachute will then open and, as soon as your rate of descent begins to reduce significantly, just slip the parachute pack off your shoulders and throw it away.

You know it makes sense! Laughing out loud

The Thought Police were out in force on a noticeably uncrowded seafront today. Two separate families of three, each with a young child paddling at the water's edge, were moved on and an elderly woman, on her own, was stopped from going in for her daily dip (aka her "Daily Exercise"). They are loving their new found power and will be reluctant to relinquish it.

But do the many really need two innocent children to be prevented from enjoying a paddle in the sea (and thereby probably souring their relationship with the police for evermore) or for an elderly woman to be stopped from having her healthy early morning dip in the sea?

But can't you see how impossible it would be to police if you had take every single incident and make a nuanced value judgement each and every time. For every innocent young family there are half-a-dozen chancers taking the piss.
"You let them swim, officer...".
Unfortunately laws like this are by necessity a pretty blunt instrument.
And if you think the old bill are enjoying themselves having to move sunbathers on, that's bonkers.

Between New Year's Day and last Sunday, there were fewer than 20,000 arrivals/departures from Hong Kong airport.

During the same period in 2019, there were 6.5 million.
