Kind of...........Armando and Miranda

Sound and Vision : Sawyer Meets Iannucci

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000dryn

A recent BBC 6 Music show in which Miranda Sawyer interviewed Armando Iannucci. It is an hour long but the talking in it is barely more than 30 minutes given that the programme also contains music, news, film clips, trailers and jingles.

Extraordinary not for its content but for how two Oxford educated 50-somethings with professional writing backgrounds converse so badly. The phrase "kind of" was used at the very least by them at the following times in the broadcast.

Armando - 6.36, 7.08, 7.30, 8.08, 9.33, 11.26, 11.53, 13.17, 21.21, 22.36, 23.30, 24.29, 27.20, 27.45, 36.57, 36.59, 37.14, 37.17, 38.26, 42.17, 43.41, 52.40, 53.34, 54.34, 54.40, 54.46, 55.52, 55.56

Miranda - 5.05, 9.11, 9.29, 21.24, 21.44, 21.55, 22.15, 23.08, 23.13, 30.31, 40.43, 42.58, 43.06, 51.38, 51.46, 54.10, 54.12

Additionally, Armando said "sort of" on at least seven occasions and "like" several times. Miranda said "obviously" at least five times and "like" several times too.

I find it hard to work out how people can write well professionally when they are so deaf to the way they themselves speak.

Do they have editing teams?

I'll be checking up on those times later :)

Kind of........Thinking Allowed.

Clearly there is an affliction among the chattering classes and those with high IQs.

In this edition of "Thinking Allowed" the guests have very interesting things to say and it is worthwhile listening to it for that reason. Unfortunately it also contains the following (which pretty much makes listening impossible):

Presenter Professor Laurie Taylor - "Kind of" at 3.50 and "Sort of" at 2.40, 17.23, 18.46 and 27.01.

Professor Tim Strangleman of Kent University, guest - "Kind of" at 4.16, 4.20, 5.16, 7.39, 7.48, 9.44, 9.49, 10.42, 11.13, 12.06 and 12.52 and "Sort of" at 7.29 and 9.53.

Professor Susie Scott of Sussex University, guest - "Kind of" at 17.08, 17.10, 17.16, 17.28, 17.33, 17.42, 19.09, 19.20, 19.29, 19.32, 19.54, 19.56, 20.06, 21.24, 21.52, 22.18, 22.30, 22.46, 26.45, 25.56, 26.06, 26.16, 26.20, 26.24, 26.41, 26.49 and 26.53.

Just what is WRONG with people these days?
