A recent BBC 6 Music show in which Miranda Sawyer interviewed Armando Iannucci. It is an hour long but the talking in it is barely more than 30 minutes given that the programme also contains music, news, film clips, trailers and jingles.
Extraordinary not for its content but for how two Oxford educated 50-somethings with professional writing backgrounds converse so badly. The phrase "kind of" was used at the very least by them at the following times in the broadcast.
Armando - 6.36, 7.08, 7.30, 8.08, 9.33, 11.26, 11.53, 13.17, 21.21, 22.36, 23.30, 24.29, 27.20, 27.45, 36.57, 36.59, 37.14, 37.17, 38.26, 42.17, 43.41, 52.40, 53.34, 54.34, 54.40, 54.46, 55.52, 55.56
Miranda - 5.05, 9.11, 9.29, 21.24, 21.44, 21.55, 22.15, 23.08, 23.13, 30.31, 40.43, 42.58, 43.06, 51.38, 51.46, 54.10, 54.12
Additionally, Armando said "sort of" on at least seven occasions and "like" several times. Miranda said "obviously" at least five times and "like" several times too.
I find it hard to work out how people can write well professionally when they are so deaf to the way they themselves speak.
Do they have editing teams?
