Many years ago, when there were only two channels on British TV, I would happily watch TV from teatime until bedtime and there was always something worth watching. Indeed, it was quite often the case that there'd be two good programs on at the same time - and that was indeed a nightmare because, in those days, an unwatched program was gone forever.
In recent times, however, things have changed dramatically. On a normal day, it's not uncommon for me to open my TV Guide at the double page displaying the programs on channels 1 to 5 and to find absolutely nothing I want to watch.
Of course, like most other people in Britain, there are many other channels available to me but it's exceedingly rare for me to find anything worth watching that isn't on one of the main five channels.
If it were not for Netflix and the ability to download films and old TV series from the Internet, my life would be reduced to one long round of boozing, bonking and book-reading.
That was a joke, by the way. My consumption of alcohol, women and printed matter has been next door to zero for a very long time indeed.
And so I give thanks to Netflix and Internet downloads for keeping me entertained - and they certainly do that.
Ironically, because I watch both Netflix and my Internet downloads on my TV set, I have to say that despite the fact there's so rarely anything good on "normal" TV, I now enjoy watching TV more than I've ever done in my life!
