British Comedy Guide

Best bit of advice for budding stand-up

Part way through Barry Cryer's excellent book "Pigs Can Fly", which is basically just anecdotes with some clearly being thought out jokes.

Nevertheless, love the man, AND my God! The people he knows/knew or worked with is mind boggling!!

Anyway, bit I just read had me burst out laughing :-

He and the late Spike Mullins (most notable for Ronnie Corbett's monologues) were auditioning a comedian for a now long forgotten TV show and it wasn't going well, and as he finished, he said to Spike.........................

"How do you suggest I finish?"

And Spike said.....................

"Throw money into the audience and escape in the ensuing confusion"
