The Sweeney (original series)

I suppose a program like The Sweeney shouldn't ordinarily be discussed on a comedy forum but I always found that there were some extremely funny moments in it.
Mainly from the interactions of the two principle characters (Jack Regan and George Carter) and their changing relationship (boss subordinate / best friends) depending on the situation.

I was reminded today of one of the most hilarious episodes called Messenger of the Gods when I was saddened to read (15 years too late) that Malcolm McFee who played Lukey Sparrow in that episode died in 2001.
Lukey was marrying the harridan, Mrs Rix's daughter but was involved in the theft of some Mercury (hence the episode title) and The Sweeney were after him.
Diana Dors playing Mrs Rix was absolutely fabulous. It is a treat to watch her bossing everyone around including the hard nut Jack Regan and even the vicar. This episode was very close in matching any sitcom you would care to mention.

The closing scene where Mrs Rix is marching towards the police station to complain again, barging everyone out of the way and Jack and George are walking to the pub when they see her coming and then break into a jog to avoid her is a brilliant ending.

In a perfect world, I will have a spare weekend to watch The Sweeney, accompanied by a crate of red wine and some good cheese. Small pleasures. Only seen a handful of episodes over the decades. Plenty recently uploaded to YouTube.

*** Very much "Queenie's Castle" - I wonder if Mrs Rix was post or pre?
