Sir Philip Arthur Collins was (and I guess still is!) a big fan of horn sections and used them on many a record.
Sorry to hear this news. Their origins (late 1960s) ran quite close to the Ramsey Lewis Trio (Wade in the Water) and similar which partially accounted for the jazz (and gospel) colouring in their funk. The point GB makes about Genesis is interesting. A lot of different links could be drawn including across to Funkadelic and the Commodores. I reckon at a stretch you could mention among the less obvious Steely Dan where an influence was notable. One of my music heroes, producer Charles Stepney, was instrumental in an upturn in their fortunes from the early-mid 1970s as they readily acknowledged. But they couldn't have been what they became without Maurice White.
