PROPER Good news.....as long as it's a proper downloadable file (such as an AVI or DIVX) and doesn't have DRM crap on it, and you can load it in video player software of your choice and you're not forced to use iTunes or some other software.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of the archives on the site either way.

Interesting but like you say - hope to see more, for eg where's the really early stuff. Most of the comedy I have either have my own recordings or am not interested.

Alas not. Expect them to reluctantly relent in a couple of years when it becomes apparent that it's a farce, but for the moment it's DRM protected with Microsoft's Silverlight, and your account (not downloads, but your user account) limited to 5 devices.

So it's still easier and cheaper to acquire shows by other means. 
And the prices are pretty steep for digital files with no extras, as opposed to physical DVDs and Blu-ray discs.
Sadly so. I'll certainly not be buying downloads of stuff that's available on Blu-ray or DVD (in order of preference!). They pitch the Store as "download to own" but ownership doesn't generally restrict you to 5 devices and a proprietary encryption technology!
How about the option of a Netflix style subscription service? Is that possible with the beeb?
They've said that's explicitly not what they ever wanted or planned to do. So, no. I think that's called the Licence Fee.

Yeah but the licence fee obviously doesn't cover the cost of a streaming service beyond iPlayer. It's probably because they are still selling their content to other services, such as Netflix, that they can't offer anything like this, as an option at least.
It's definitely the way the industry is going, so at some point when optical media is obsolete or becoming so, I see no other option for them.
Being charged extra for HD versions always annoys me, especially since shows from the last decade or so were filmed and broadcast in HD. The cost of the additional bandwidth for the download is negligible.
