I just watched the Australian version of Pointless for the first time. It's like Pointless-lite:
Only three pairs of contestants, not four.
So after Round 1, it's straight into the head-to-head.
There's no "tell us/remind us what you do?" stuff before the contestants give their first answer.
Instead, there's a very brief, "So, we heard you did something dumb once, tell us about that..." exchange in the head-to-head.
The show runs for 23 minutes, excluding ad breaks.
The two hosts try hard to emulate Armstrong and Osman, but their banter feels a bit forced, desperate and verging into vulgarity at times. The Aussie Osman is not subtle.
The electronic scoreboard zooms along at about double the speed of the UK version.
In the final round, the winning pair choose from only two categories, then get two options and have only 30 seconds to come up with two answers.
The Aussie version has distinctly less charm.
The prize money is equally shit, even though it's on a commercial network (albeit a broke commercial network).
The set of the Aussie version looks smaller and cramped and crappier.
But it's not dreadful.
Meanwhile, on Pointless proper, Xander has improved his performance of late by ditching some of his cliches in favour of more honest assessments of poor answers.
