No way, I love Geoffrey Palmer!
He's my fantasy grandad.
Carla Lane - Sitcom Scripts Page 2
Grandad maybe - but that doesn't mean.........
SURELY NO!
Quote: Aaron @ September 24, 2007, 11:06 AMRustle, that's a great story. Wish I had been in that position! (That was The Last Laugh, no?)
Yes Aaron, it was The Last Laugh - and no, I didn't win! (Don't know what happened with the winning script; they were suposed to be making a pilot). All the finalists had their scripts acted out on stage though and it was great to see an audience laughing at your jokes. There was some great writing, proving just how hard it is and how lucky you have to be to become a success.
I loved Bread because it was laugh out loud, but I too found Butterflies a little depressing. I think now I can appreciate the writing more, but at the time I was young and had no experience of life and relationships, so I couldn't possibly connect with it. I think a lot of married women at the time enjoyed it because it gave them a kind of hope and a belief that there were other things in life apart from being tied to the kitchen sink. I think Butterflies was quite close to home for Carla. She has openly admitted in her new book that she had a affair while she was married.
Completely off-topic, her home is incredible, with rescue animals running around all over the place. She's dedicated her life to animals and most of the money she made from her writing has gone to caring for them. Anyone who cares so much about animals is a good egg in my book.
OK, I'll stop drivelling on now .... sorry.
I'm just glad that finally there's people agreeing with me that it was depressing!
Depressing? Wendy Craig? I honestly don't recall Butterflies as depressing. Mind you I was tied up to a radiator myself so I guess it depends on POV.
Don't forget tonight at 6pm Smooth FM 102.2, she will be choosing her 6 favourite records, it was recorded yesterday but not sure what spoke about, but at least she found the radio station which was a result
As mentioned above Carla spends all her time and money looking after her rescued animals, so I hope the scripts do well for her.
Although Bread brings me out in hives, I was a huge fan of Butterflies. In many ways it was one of the first naturalistic comedies on British TV, that didn't always feel the need to go for obvious laughs. So in some ways it was twenty odd years ahead of its time. It also had a considerable amount of depth in it's portrait of a woman trapped by her marriage and family.
