Setting: Sara is meeting bob for the first time tonight, they are in a nice restaurant having a meal, the date has been going well and is about 30 minutes in.

Sara: So tell me Bob, how comes you are still single?
Bob: Well, After my wife died so tragically, I've struggled to meet new people.
Sara: Ohthat's very sad, how did your wife die?
Bob: She was murdered by a crazed serial killer who strangled her to death.
Sara:that's terrible.
Bob: I had to watch as she was slowly chocked, its an image I'll never forget.
Sara: Oh Bob, Did the police even catch who did it?
Bob: No...., I'm smarter than that!

I like that but a few line less maybe?

Sara: So tell me Bob, how comes you are still single?

your right it reads better, I liked the idea of him implying he had to watch her die, but I guess sometimes you have to trim your ideas down to get the impact. thanks, good advice
