My grandfather was in the trenches in WW1 on Christmas Eve 1914.
He told of men sick of the killings, putting down their weapons and meeting in 'No Mans Land', where they exchanged handshakes and gifts, even swapping food from their meagre rations.
In gentle snowfall they sang the beautiful German carol Silent Night. Tears rolled down the cheeks of young men who knew many would never see their mother again.
A football match was hastily arranged...but abandoned after 20mins when fighting broke out between the rival armies after the third German goal was clearly off-side.
Is this disrespectful ?
Shouldn't think so/
It's just not that amusing.
Getting beat at football by the Germans never is.
no not disrespectful, very good, I think I could go further,
maybe finish with
"I should have shot the bastard when I had the chance" was the popular consensus of opinion, about that 3rd goal!
Wasn't this pretty much covered in Blackadder Goes Forth?
Blackadder says something along the lines of "I've was never offside" when talking about the Christmas Day match.
You could go much further. Everybody who was there is dead now.
I've was never off side.
I presume the script writer was substituted.
I think offside is one word Jerf. Maybe the scriptwriter was sitting on the bench with your copy editor
Marc I wondered if you would spot my deliberate mistake but you missed the other one.
I let the other one go as although it is not the usual spelling it is perfectly acceptable usage.
You don't have to join the words together as you do in the first instance. For example think of book writer, article writer, poetry writer, lyric writer... Etc.
I am sure you see it now.
