So would you say the want moves the story along and the comedy comes from the characters (how the characters react to situations/each other)?

Well, I would.

But I'm not sure Mr. P agrees - though I think some of the terminology is getting mixed up!
:)

When I say want I mean how they see the world or want to be seen by the world.

I don't agree with anybody! ;) In sitcom you don't start writing a chapter and then see what he wants in that episode. It's something built into the DNA from the beginning. Something that each episode sees them trying to get, not getting it and returning them to the status quo. Victor Meldrew and Larry David just want a quiet peaceful ordered life. But...

Well you see the point I hope?

the character has the want and this drives the story along. By showing the characters want we show more of the character which basically 'creates' the character in the story like Marc said.

When you're talking about writing, the perppective means which characters perspective, we the reader / play watcher is viewing it from in that particular scene.

Also, you can have comedy that isn't about exaggerated flaws, for example, just the unexpected / the surprise.
