You what?????????

Writing scripts is clearly not like writing a novel or a short story. Long passages of text explaining a scene set-up are not required, for one thing... and I'm always conscious of the fact that whatever you write in a script, it’s really only a tool for the director and actors to play with as they wish, in order to enhance (or indeed, ruin) the final product. As it should be, of course… but I’m not yet comfortable with that.

I prefer to write the fait accompli. Although that’s probably because I’m some kind of control freak…

Oh I see. The finished product with a book is the book, but the finished product with a sitcom is the TV show itself, not the script.

Makes sense!

Yes! I mean, you'll maybe get edits/suggestions from your editor if you're writing a novel but, ultimately, the end product is the novel itself... and its yours.

I think the skill in being a great script writer (comdey included) is to be able to communicate your ideas and characters and so on, within the strict formatting rules. And monologue/dialogue... well, that just has to 'jump off the page', so to speak, to further this ideal.

I admire anyone who can do this.

OK

Instead of diving head first in with your sitcom idea Darren. Try writing sketches or shorts and post them on here and we'll rip 'em to shreds.

:)
