Sitcom Structure

Hi guys,
What are the best books on structuring a sitcom and how that sort of thing works? The more nerdy and technical the better :P
Thanks

This one is ace, I think:

I would recommend "The Little book of Sitcom" John Vorhaus
The Sitcommission e-book is pretty good too Also
Marc Blake "How not to write a sitcom"

They ultimately all say the same thing but have there own different take on it that suit different sorts of writers, so might be worth reading a few and taking points from each. I would also recommend the blog of James Cary (sitcomgeek.blogspot.com) amongst other things he has got some great tips on plotting and planning in there.

IT crowd series 4 has an audio commentary as an extra which is basically Graham Linehan's guide to writing sitcoms. Stumbling across this is what first inspired me to get writing sitcom. In many ways I wish I'd never seen it !

Good luck.

There's some interesting videos on yoitube too - Graham Lineham has a couple and so does Stephen Merchant - also John Cleese has done some helpful interviews

I'd recommend watching episodes of the kind of sitcoms you're looking to write and making notes. Jot down a sentence or two describing what happens in each scene along with the time. When you've finished, you'll have a rough idea of the number of scenes in each episode, as well as the average scene length. Plus, you'll have a good idea of where all the plot twists go.

Writing Television Sitcoms by Evan S Smith is all you need.
