Just wondering about a sitcom pilot - If my pilot is optioned by a production company do they have to pay me? Can someone please explain how a production company goes about doing these sort of things and how they pitch?

How much you'll get given for an option can vary, but it can very well be no more than a token amount.
Some of them don't give anything, but if they do it'll be a token amount, as Matthew says, which will be subtracted from the larger fee in the glorious event of being commissioned.
