How are audience ratings % then split with company

I'd like to find out about the %s against the viewer ratings for a channel - how does that get split with the production companies involved?

So far, it's proving rather tricky to find a solid answer, so any help or guidance would be most appreciated!

Thanks x

I'm not sure I understand the question.

I do not understand the question either.

If you see a figure like "3.5m (29%)" it means that the programme(s) in question attracted an audience of 3.5 million people, which was 29% of the total television audience at that time. The other 71% would have been watching different channels.

Hello, sorry if its confusing, Im not sure how best to ask it!

For example, there's a 2% rating against 400,000 viewers on a show for example; so that 2% totals say £20k per show? If so, the show filming costs have to be calculated against that and kept at bear minimum to get that 2% -

so how is that 2% - split with the production company?

Does it work like that? Or do they just pay for the concept and take a totally different approach?

Hope that's abit clearer? (probably not! )

I think I understand... ish.

The ratings have absolutely no bearing on what a production company is paid for a programme. In many cases they'll already have been paid, months in advance of broadcast.

If ratings are high, than the producer has greater bargaining power to demand more money for any further series not yet contracted, however.

In your example, the 2% figure means that 20 million people were believed to have been watching television in the UK during that time slot. 2% of 20 million is 400,000.
