My first several 'jokes' Page 2
Quote: sootyj @ 30th January 2014, 11:06 AM GMTI'm not sure this advice is always fair, it takes along time to build up the gag writing skills to be able to confidently write a dozen gags a day. And even then as it's been said when someone posts 8 jokes, it's usually their best 8, post 800 average jokes uses up little more than bandwith.
And as for jokes only working on stage. I do maybe 3 gigs a year, standup is more of a hobby. But I can sell jokes over and over, as do several other writers on this site. I've never been a bestman but I've written dozens of bestman speeches.
So write jokes unconfidently. It's what every joke writer throughout history has done, at least to begin with.
There is no secret to any kind of writing other than to keep doing it, repetitively, over and over and over until you get better.
You want to write good jokes? Well write thousands of jokes, even with the worst hit rate in the world you'll write one or two good ones. Write some jokes, then write some more jokes. Don't be afraid to write "bad" jokes, just write jokes. No one produces gold every time their fingers touch the keyboard but every time you write something, anything, you are closer to writing something great.

Great.
I'll tell that to my bank next time they want a mortgage payment.
I mean the guy who wrote a 1000 jokes won't post all of them, certainly some of the stinkers I've written for kids joke books.
Put it this way I'm glad they don't have my name attached to them.
It's more when someone puts their jokes up here, they're the ones they consider their best.
With Nick81 they're pretty damned good, but with many, they're erm not so good.
But I think Lee probably one of BCG's most succesful writers has never done one standup gig.

But where does it take you.
People will pay you to tweet for them or mention stuff on a succesful Facebook page.
With sickipedia, where's the money.

Fair enough, but I bet he's developed his own sense of what works and what doesn't from his own, repeated experiences.
I'm not knocking people for coming on here, posting a dozen jokes and asking people if they are on the right track but I'm just saying talk any advice under consideration, have a look at the sort of thing the person giving the advice is writing and then decide how much credence you want to give to that person's opinion.
I'd agree test a joke in the environment you expect to use it.
Nothing worse than watching a standup patiently trying to explain a joke to a bored audience.

They might not be
There's another thread for jokes you consider good or your best.
This one just stipulates that you tell a joke
They don't have to be any good.
Actually I'm not even on that thread
My mistake

Which is just as well.
*Miaow*
Lost in the labyrinth of BCG, follow the bread crumbs back out again.
Just as an aside, why would you post up anything that you didn't think might have some value?
Surely no one deliberately posts (non-ironic) rubbish jokes on here, what would be the point?
Joke writing definitely gets easier with practice, but then you start seeing comedy everywhere and becomes a form of madness.

I don't know, some top comedians seem to get away with this.

Well I suppose to learn why they're not funny, because they think they're funny, because people like sharing crap jokes.
Some comedians have made lucrative careers out of it.
Some great points from both Sooty and Tony, but here is my "beef" with twitter.
When you signed up to twitter, you were an established stand up, and consequently get followers who mainly know the quality of your work. Joe public signs up to twitter, and even with plenty of top quality jokes, his follower count remains low. My argument for getting work off the back of twitter content, is if you are more well known that not.
Of course there are exceptions to the rule (little lost lad for one and sixth form poet another) who go on to bigger and better things thanks to their twitter account, but for the average Joe public, regardless of how good the content of their jokes are, it can be like pissing in the wind.
Twitter makes money if your persistent and work hard at it.

This.
I wasn't particularly well known when I started putting jokes on twitter but, I admit, it's probably easier for a stand up who has connections in the comedy industry.
However their are plenty of non-comedians who have made a real impact using twitter
Have a look here, http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2011/12/29/twitter-funny-tweets_n_1174130.html
And here, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/the-filter/10453300/Top-30-funny-people-to-follow-on-Twitter.html
These are all people who've persevered and used twitter to their advantage, bit by bit increasing their following, giving out content and making twitter a fun experience for people who then recommend them to others.
Like everything, put in enough effort and you'll be rewarded in some way.
