A few scenes....

The scenes are from a script I've just written but do not come in this order, anyway....

FADE IN:

INT. KITCHEN. DAY

Annie sits across from her cousin Claire, who is eating breakfast alongside her boyfriend, Rob.

ANNIE
Once again thanks for letting me stay here.

CLAIRE
Oh, it’s no problem.

ANNIE
I just can’t believe dad thought it’d better to sell up and move to France without giving me any notice. Anyway, I’ve got to go. They can’t exactly interview me if I’m not there.

ROB
My old boss you used to talk to people who weren’t there.

ANNIE
What happened to him?

ROB
He murdered his wife.

Annie is taken back. Claire nudges Rob, hard.

CLAIRE
By the way, Steven called.

ANNIE
Oh, tell him I’ll call him later.

CLAIRE
It’ll be 3am there.

ANNIE
Well, I dunno... I’ll leave a message, bye.

Annie grabs a piece of toast.

CLAIRE
Okay. Well, good luck.

ROB
(whispers)
You could be next.

ANNIE
What?

ROB
Nothing.

Annie partially snaps and heads off. Rob imitates the stabbing scene from, “Psycho.”

ROB
Ring! Ring! Ring!

CLAIRE
Why do you do that?

INT. RECEPTION. DAY

Annie is tapping her foot vigorously. The applicant next to her looks pissed off.

ANNIE
Oops, sorry. Sorry.

The applicant nods graciously. The receptionist says:

RECEPTIONIST
(to Annie)
You can go through now.

INT. TOBY‘S OFFICE. DAY

Annie sits in a large office beside Vicky, and across from her soon-to-be boss, Toby.

TOBY
Thanks for coming in, Annie.

ANNIE
Oh, no problem.

TOBY
After we got your references, we, e.g., myself and the board, had a very interesting “convo” about you.

VICKY
I... I didn’t get a choice.

TOBY
We were wondering whether it would be a good decision if you were to become newest member of the onscreen news team. You see, your CV is so impressive it feels like you could practically do everyone else’s work single-handed.

ANNIE
You’re kidding me?

TOBY
Nope.

VICKY
I... I do a little work.

ANNIE
So, have you made your decision?

TOBY
Yes.

ANNIE
And what is it?

TOBY
No, no. That’s it. It’s a yes.

ANNIE
Oh, my god. I can’t believe it.

VICKY
I know I was surprised to.

ANNIE
I... this is just fantastic. Thank you so, so much. You will not regret it.

TOBY
I hope not and by the looks of it you’re raring to go. Congratulations!

Toby goes to hug her but before Annie can accept, she says:

ANNIE
Can I just ask one little thing?

TOBY
Sure, go ahead.

ANNIE
Why me?

TOBY
Why you?

VICKY
Yeah. Why her?

TOBY
Well, you’re intelligent and funny and if you don’t mind me saying you’re very good-looking... pretty, you know, in a very traditional way, which people can relate to. You’ve got this look about you that doesn’t make women jealous but still makes them say...

VICKY
Bitch!

TOBY
Exactly! But ultimately, it was the way you don’t put too much effort into your appearance, like right now.

Annie looks insulted.

TOBY (CONT’D)
It’s natural.

VICKY
Yeah.

TOBY
Like, err... a tree.

There we go. I hope you enjoyed it, etc.
