Videos that make you think/learn about smart stuff

Please recommend any videos or series you've ever watched on the interweb that you've found interesting, educational, inspiring, etc.

I've been watching some of the random TED talks, does anyone else watch these and would they like to recommend any?

Is there a science/political/educational series on YouTube you can recommend?

Oh and if anyone can think of a better title for the thread, please suggest one!

Audio tends to be better than visual; just tune into radio4 more often.

Well audio tends to accompany visual quite often.

The mind-f**k that is Holographic Universe Theory

Perfect, thanks!

The Royal Institutes Christmas Lectures are always fun and informative, I find. Not too many full ones one YouTube though it seems.

I watch them most years, even though they're aimed at kids, it's still nice to catch up on things that may have past you by.

Yeah, exactly. I never paid attention back in school, towards the end.

Not sure if this is really what you mean, but I absolutely love this documentary.

It's called "Dear Zachary". A man is murdered by his psycho ex, who promptly flees to Canada and announces she is pregnant. The man's parents (who are amazing) move to Canada and share custody of the baby with her. They end up going to MacDonalds and swimming with the woman who murdered their son.

Then something happens which makes me cry every single time.

The filmmaker was the man's best friend and the style is very frantic, aggressive and emotional. I like that.

Oh, and the case leads to a change in bail law in Canada, but that probably won't interest anyone but me.

Anyway, it is definitely worth a watch. You won't be able to forget it.

That documentary is actually painful for me to watch, no one should suffer so much

I found the change in law one of the most interesting bits.

I wrote a TED for someone once, it was terrible.

Yep, it is definitely not one to watch when you're feeling sad. There is something strangely uplifting about it though. The parents are amazing people.

There is a great follow up on YouTube, following what happens next. It ends with the parents putting up Christmas decorations for the first time since the death of their son. They seem to have found a measure of peace.

It's a DVD set , but Simon Shama's "A History of Britain" is superb

Yes it is :)

Anything applies that we can watch in between cat videos.

As is his story of the Jews.

Too which I think the theme music should have been.
