I nearly entered the comp, wrote eight pages of unfunny comedy, realised it was an insult to the tree that had provided the paper it was written on, and buried it.

Besides, I hate red.

has anyone had a clarification of when the deadline really was? I received the competition closed entry when I tried on Sunday night but nothing about dodgy inboxes.

That's what happened to me. I've just forwarded their 'competition closed' email back to them with my resubmission, and stated that the time stamp on that email proves I originally sent my entry before the extended deadline.
