RIP Nelson Mandela Page 3

A Tory poster from the 1980's

John Bercow MP was the chairman of the Tory group that had those posters printed

This is what he said the other day as he jumped on the Nelson Mandela bandwagon

"On the sad news of his death I would like to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela; an inspiration not only for his nation and for Africa, but for the world. He was Tata, father, to us all. His extraordinary commitment to democracy, peace and the fight against injustice has motivated generations to stand up for freedom.

Perhaps most striking was the way in which he combined determination to achieve justice for South Africa, with an absence of bitterness towards those who had subjected him to decades of injustice. That itself speaks to the character of the man.

In honour of his extraordinary leadership, vision and dedication there will be tributes in the House of Commons on Monday, 9 December 2013."

Hypocritical arse!

He used to ring me from time to time for advice - always used to reverse the charges, the tight bastard!

I missed seeing him everymorning from my watchtower on robin usland

RIP Nelson Mandela a true legend to the world. :(

Hypocritical arse!

Mandela had been tried 20 years earlier and not been given a death sentence.

By this time he'd been transferred to a more comfortable prison and was involved in negotiations with the government that would lead to the dismantling of Aparhteid.

There was no campaign to get him hanged. It was a ridiculous joke Tshirt, like the ones about shooting Regan etc.

Pretending it was, is an act of such crass ignorance it would surprise me.

But it would seem most of the Guardian reading world believe it to be true.

Yes the hugely hypocritical completely false wave of tribute giving by tory politicians is a bit stomach turning! Sick Osbourne on R4 the other day saying how he grew up with his great example of dignified courage etc. to the world. What a load of utter crap that is from that lying little prick. The truth is the Thatcher govt that he and Cameron worshipped and want to recreate, officially ignored all public calls to petition the RSA for his release from prison and actually wanted to end the trade and sport sanctions with them.

And only ten years ago the tory run Westminster council vigorously blocked mayor Livingstone's attempts to erect a Mandela statue on the empty plinth at Trafalgar Square. He then said they'd been blocking absolutely anything to do with Mandela like the proposed Mandela Day and all sorts of other events to celebrate him. And yet here they are squirting their posh champagne from the Downing Street vaults in their eyes and leading the tributes to him for political gain! Disturbing or what? Sick Sick Sick

They blocked the building of a statue worshipping a foreign leader, who didn't benefit this country one jot.

Good for them, Gandhi didn't get one. He's a got a statue a mile up the road outside SOAS.

I think you should only be allowed a statue in Trafalgar if you've killed at least 10 foreigners.

Blair should get a massive one then

Too right, sticking 2 fingers up at the East.

Course if Mandela had been a poofter, eh, Kips...?

Nb further proof the right wing seem to have great difficulty with satire. Yes there have been a few who could do it. But this idiotic bit of over statement has hung around their neck for years.

When it first came on the radio I misheard and thought Trevor Nelson had died. I was delighted.

Regarding Mandela, the thing that wrongly jumped to my mind was the following infamous joke from Jerry Sadowitz back in the 1980s.

"Nelson Mandela, what a c**t! Terry Waite, f**king bastard! You know, you lend some people a fiver and you never see them again."
