First draft is indeed usually a bit shit.

But, generally, as you get more practiced, the first draft becomes less awful and the second draft feels much easier. You also tend to sell your stuff earlier the more experienced you become.

Progression partly depends on how far down the learning curve you naturally start.

In my experience, the quicker you get the First Draft done the better.
Once that's out of the way you can get on with things properly.

Bash it out, but don't send it out.
