Ja'mie: Private School Girl

Chris Lilley's new sitcom, this time based only on Ja'mie King.

Sadly I thought Ja'mie was his weakest character from 'We Can Be Heroes' and 'Summer Heights High'. Gave this a watch though and it wasn't SO bad. Not really my cup of tea.

Anyone else have any opinions on this after watching episode 1?

I enjoyed it, although I'm not sure if I will still feel the same after serveral episodes of just one character. Also when the character first appeared I wasn't that much older than her, so oould realte a bit better.

Even after one episode, it's still one of the better Aussie produced comedies in the last few years. Most of the stuff made in the last few years has been terrible.

I'd say this was the 4th funniest show out of AU this week. Legally Brown, Audrey's Kitchen and 7Days were all better. With Gruen Planet on air as well, it's really a decent time for Aussie comedy. Oh ya, also Santo, Sam and Ed's Soccer show (which I've only seen YouTube clips of) looks pretty funny for a sports show.

Still lamenting the loss of "Kath & Kim." Wish they'd do another season.

Just seen the last episode of this... Absolutely mental.

good mental or bad mental?

I've been a huge fan of chris lilley since SHH. Angry Boys took a while for me to warm to.
This series was over before it really got going (for some reason I thought it was 8 episodes).

Some of the jokes and the social commentary are spot on, but at nearly 40, the hot teenage girl is possibly a step too far for him to play.
She did also have some annoying tendencies and one thing that let him down is that the show was focused on only one of his characters and on top of that there were no other strong characters in the storyline.

i think I was partially disappointed because I know what he's capable of. if this was his first series, I'd probably have enjoyed it more.
however I still have faith in him and if he's able to knock out that jonah series soon, he'll have redeemed himself.

Yeh I agree with all you've said. The last episode of this was just plain bonkers. I'll leave it to you to decide whether or not it was good or bad mental! I laughed a good bit!

The last episode justifies the whole thing. There's no way that could've been done with a teenage (or 20 something that looks teenage) actress. The series as a whole was a bit sameish and forgettable, but the last episode will go down in sitcom history of WTF! moments.

Good effort on the tuck job by him in that scene too!

I almost felt that the whole show was building to that moment, but Jonah's dicktation ending was more emotional.

I'm also unsure of how he managed to get 5 characters into 12 shows (angry boys) or 3 into 8 (SHH) but needed 6 episodes for 1 character here, and didn't deliver a story line stronger than any of the previous ones. I think if he'd made the series longer, trimmed the fat and maybe incorporated the jonah story (and maybe mr G, who could now be a dance director of musicals), then he wouldn't have left any fans disappointed.

it started in the US last week and was slated by the media. http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/tv-and-radio/jamie-private-school-girl-savaged-by-us-critics-transphobic-drag-20131125-2y4tn.html

That was CGI... made the whole scene weirder.

The only review I read was AV Club's and I thought that was rather unfair. I'm not sure what was transphobic about it, nor do I think a comedy has to have a sympathetic character to be successful.

I'm also not a fan. But I have seen far worse.

Confeitor,
I just saw the whole series and must say that it's really quite enjoyable. Yes, it's crass and somewhat infantile, but it is no less very telling of what I've noticed about teenage rich brats, which makes it an comical indictment of today's youth.
The series just made me keep looking because, as that old saying goes "I just wanted to see what they were going to do next".
The nightmarish part of watching it in one sitting was standing the music... FUCK... I'm glad I'm not that age... or was the music used as a gag? because it could be... either way, teen music is shit.
But back to Ja'mie.
Dead pan comedy is a good genre.

Just watched the first episode. It wasn't his best stuff and I thought the character wasn't strong enough for a series. Worse than that I was very aware that it was a middle aged man playing a school girl especially when he put his hand between one of the girls thighs to judge how thin she was. Very odd. To be honest any character from summer heights high would have been more entertaining than this one
