When/Why did the BCG become so dull & lifeless? Page 25

Laughing out loud Keep that dictionary close!

Will do. :)

I prefer your new picture.

Music is good - and it would complement the morris dancing.

Was amused by the Johnnie Walker pickle. If not quite my thing, the reviews for the first were fine.

The EastEnders credit shows that there is no need for DIRECT experience.

But you do have considerable background in........the serious.

Your writing is so much lengthier in interviews.

I reckon, given Bournemouth, you are about 45.

Most people who say critique is shit never go there.

I'm not saying it isn't from time to time, but even when it's terrible it has more place on a comedy forum than endless General Discussion threads, if you ask me.

Is it a Haiku variant? :)

Praise from the flat land Banjo society is high praise indeed.

It's a high note!

or like Butlins, they went there and they didn't like it so they slate it on Tripadvisor.

Yes - but THIS is the kireji.

That's alright then.

In part you old chap.

Well I am not sure why you are taking criticism of Critique as a personal attack on you.

Besides, I love Critique; it is why I joined the site in the first place. And I think I have pretty good record of being civil and constructive.

It is just that when I am bored enough to spend some time in Critique, these days I do not find much I can get my teeth into. It would help if people actually took on board criticism and made the effort to improve. They could do a lot worse than use you as an example.

I seem to remember the Perry's of this world with real success tended to be amongst the most generous and thoughtful critics.

As for you who've known neither failure, nor success. Why don't you take your sense of inadequacy along with your failure and bury it in the back garden, along with all the cat turds.

Ouch! Hey! did you throw that brick at me?

If you only visit when you're bored then the problem is you not the site, if you went on when you weren't bored you might see it in a different light.

Critique would be different with a guest reader, writers would put up the best they can do based on the premise that they have an outside chance of tweeking the interest of an agent.

Why not put up the best you can do anyway? Why not always do the best you can do?

Personally, ignoring the fact that this plan seems phenomenally unlikely to come about to me (and Zooo's original reply slayed me, I must admit), I quite like Critique as it is, as a way of throwing ideas about, not as a competition (except for the bit that is a competition).

but it was often a case of the emperors new clothes when Bussell put stuff up with production values.

Eh?

Quote: sootyj @ October 7 2013, 2:21 PM BST

And actually by extension you're own stuff Ben, so was Missing Scene shit with false praise heaped on it?

There was heaped praise?

Well, I am reading in the hope of being amused, so I should say that I was in a receptive state of mind.

But 'bored' was perhaps not the right word; I should have said 'prepared to generously donate some of my valuable time'. I do not really write much comedy writing these days, because, to be honest, I am not actually very good, but I feel that I know enough that I can be helpful.

Also, for all his protests, I should point out that the least compromising critic when it comes to calling a turd a turd is sootyj.

We are all on the same side, I hope; we want Critique to be better.

Funny how when discussing perceived problems with this site so many people turn to Critique rather than the likes of the "What vegetable do you most resemble" thread. Though on second thoughts that's not a bad one.

Critique only matters as a recruiting ground. When it is working well it brings in people who aspire to a career in comedy writing, and they tend to be good posters. Not that there are not many excellent posters who are not deluded psychotics.

And, yes, I was trying to find a tactful way to get around to discussing the problem that the site has been over-run by infantile morons.

What vegetable do you most resemble?
