When/Why did the BCG become so dull & lifeless? Page 23

or if I want to write a shitty skit, about a dog awful pun, I don't neccasairly want Danny Clever chops of the BBC sniffing around it.

Is it ok to steal this - if it is just for personal use?

Feel free to share my genius with the world.

I often use critique just to put ideas up and they can be worse than half arsed, but if they were being viewed by a person with influence I would put up stuff that was as polished as I could do it, that's my point.

It would be a courtesy to those who take the trouble to comment in Critique if you put some effort into your work before asking others to go to the troubling of reading and commenting. It is not just 'persons with influence' who have better uses for their time than wading through crap.

Why be so abrasive?
I gave an honest explanation as to how I use critique, I never demanded any feedback I just do it to get myself oiled up as it were.

It's not a metaphor I am comfortable with.

Critique has always been awful. When I first came here in 2007 I couldn't even begin to understand the praise being lavished on awful, awful sketches. Maybe there was a phase when there were slightly better things being posted and some good advice, but it was a fleeting phase at most.

Phases fleet Ben, it's what they do.

Really so everything there is awful, including everything I've ever written?

Thanks Ben didn't realise I was so shit.

I have seen better on there than I have on the telly, ok a lot of its unpolished but the core essence is in place.
Try not to be so negative about new writing, just be happy its happening and try to enter into the spirit of it rather than sounding world weary and tired.
I know critiques not everyone's cup of tea, bu its not compulsory so you can avoid it if you feel so inclined and you can post stuff up if your not, it's a win win.

And actually by extension you're own stuff Ben, so was Missing Scene shit with false praise heaped on it?

Where is Bex when we need her ;)

Okay it is easy to be nostalgic, but when I joined in 2008, yes, there was plenty of dross, but the likes of David Bussell, Graham Bandage, James Harris, Slag A, Yacoub Wingnut, greenville, Afinkawan, Otterfox, Fred Sunshine, Leevil, Perry Nium, and winterlight (oh, and sootyj) were regularly posting in Critique; it wasn't all gold, but at least there was enough substance to the contributions to make it interesting to discuss why they were not working.

Not that it is all awful even now; gappy, for instance, is a talented lad, and Jennie's sitcom generated an interesting discussion. Where it becomes depressing is when in order to find anything worth commenting on you have to wade through pages of first-idea-that-came-into-the-head can't-be-bothered-to-format-it-properly one joke sketches, usually based on a lame pun or some schoolboy attempt to shock.

And don't even get me started on Showcase...

When I first started here I wrote some sketches (yes I know) and I put it up in Critique and people were gently critical and helpful to pull me in the right direction. The sketches were not good, but had people been as cruel as they are nowadays I would have probably never returned.

Think about what you write in criticism of people's work... you can be critical without being a complete twat about it.

You know what I was going to post a skit today, but now I'm going to reserve my pearls for a better breed of swine.
