My dad still has a sort of working VHS. And because charity shops tend to give away video tapes for free he has a massive collection of films and TV shows that wobble and flicker when you watch them, and take an age to rewind to the start.

You have to remember though that in the 1980s once a film had finished it's cinema run it could conceivably be years before you'd get a chance to see it on TV, so renting it on VHS was the only way you could watch it.
It's incredible to believe now that it was 3 years between the original Star Wars films, I still remember the excitement of waiting 3 years between 1980 and 1983 to find out if Darth Vader really was Luke's father.
Nowadays people (myself included) won't even wait 7 days to watch a serial, we want it all at once on a box set.
