The feared Rumpo Kid rides into Stodge City one day, this western town is a haven of peace, only Josh the local undertaker bemoaning the lack of business.
I would rate this movie 7/10. It's good and funny but not one of my favourites.
Anyone else like this film?
A great film in many respects. Arguably one of the most 'filmic' of the Carry Ons, and probably the best designed and shot. But it just lacks that extra spark of magic for me.
Kenneth Williams on top form as Judge Burke.
My least favourite Carry On.

Jim Dale's finest hour; the underrated Angela Douglas is also very good.
Not sure why it's so under rated, it seems to be easily one of their best to me, but not everyone likes westerns do they, could that be it? Dale was imo the most consistently good performer in all he was in, he never seemed to flag one bit, unlike Sid and one or two others. He gave most of the action too.

I think probably a lot of it is that it's not set in Britain. The most popular of the Carry On films (different thing to the most critically acclaimed) tend to be those set here and reflecting British life, I find.
A great Carry On! One of the best from the 60s.

Odd, I much prefer the film parodies: Up the Khyber, Cleo, Screaming, Jack, Cowboy, Spying, even Follow That Camel (not so much Up the Jungle, Dick, Henry or Don't Lose Your Head).
Of the later everyday British everyday life ones only Doctor and Camping really hold up, with Abroad being tolerable. Loving, Matron, At Your Convenience, Behind and Girls are all utterly atrocious.

Well, Screaming!, Spying, Dick, Henry and (part of) Don't Lose Your Head are set here (note I didn't use the term 'contemporary'). Up The Khyber is essentially 'here', as are both Jack and Up The Jungle.
