Why are people stupid?

Was "Why do people smoke?"

I can't for the life of me see why young people still take up smoking. Maybe its modern Darwinian selection or summin but with all the health worries and the cost what is it about smoking. Surely they still can't be taking it up because they think they look cool. Help me i'm perplexed.

P.S. I don't hate smokers

I don't know. I don't smoke and weirdly none of my friends ever have either.
(I don't choose them based on that or anything.):)

OK ... as a fifty-year puffer (my mum gave me my first 'legit' one on a boat trip to Dunkirk when I was around 13 or 14 ... and tomorrow I'm 64) I would suggest the best thing to do is stay away from them! They are a total waste of money on the one hand but have the unfortunate habit of triggering a 'need' anytime you want to 'think' about something. It becomes a subconscious reaction ... I'm thinking ... so grab a ciggie!
Having said that, I nevertheless think that what I choose to do is my own affair, and the current 'ban the buggers' movement I frankly think deserve the same sort of nonsense directed at them (if I could really be bothered to think of something!). I ain't gonna stop, but at the same time I'd never encourage anyone to start ... its crazy ... but then I do lots of other crazy things too!!

If they were pink and tasted of strawberries, I'd give 'em a go.

I don't geddit either? Silly bastards!

meh. What ever floats your boat. I smoke cigars when I go out on a serious booze up.

Peeps smoke because they want to. I smoke when I want to.

Same reason they do most things. They're f**king stupid, irresponsible, and have no sense of the value of health, money, etc etc.

Maybe its modern Darwinian selection or summin...

I like to think that that's why kids do dumb shit like play on railway lines. IMO, the trains shouldn't stop. Maybe the kids would if they didn't.

And didn't stink to high heavens, of course.

Remarkable tolerance, Aaron!

Actually, I'm very tolerant. :)

Because I like it!!!!!!!!!!!

I can understand growing to like it for all the various reasons, but did anyone actually like the taste, the very first time they tried it?

Like Gavin, I smoke cigars, and I have to say it's really relaxing, and is enjoyable in the same way that drinking good cognac is enjoyable.

People are highly selective regarding the health risks of an activity. I doubt there's anyone on this forum who doesn't have a mobile phone. Do you know its SAR value? That's the amount of radiation being absorbed by your brain from it's transmitter. Virtually all tests of mobile phone radiation have shown cell damage, DNA damage and an increased risk of benign tumors and acoustic neuromas. But people don't give a f**k. Offer them a cigarette on the other hand and they'd pass out.

I think it's really your choice to smoke or not. It beats drugs and drink by a long shot in terms of behavioural effects (a bit "best of 3 evils" I know) and while it's legal, it's really a matter of choice what you do in your own homes.

But I will say one thing. Those smokers who bang on about having their rights and freedom of choice taken away should think about the freedom of choice of the people around them not to have their lungs harmed by YOUR want of a fag and IT DOES CAUSE HARM. Brought up in a family where smoking was the norm and it was even more the norm to do it around children, by the time I hit my early teens, my breathing was screwed. I would get short of breathe climbing the stairs and was always phlemy. It was only when I moved out into a non smoking house that it started to clear up and I was finally able to live a phlem free life. Also, cancer is an ugly word and an even uglier disease that I would never wish on anyone. So the next time anyone moans about the smoking ban, think about the OTHER lives it's effecting. It does work both ways you know.

Okay, finger wagging over. People may not like it but people don't like tumors ether. That's my 2p's worth over. I'll make a tea, we move on, and learn to love again. Done.

Well I just lurrrrrrrrrrrve the argments around smoking.
For instance most restaurants did not allow it before the ban, nor airports, offices, cinemas etc. It was only pubs. Now if you dont want cancer save your liver too by staying out of the pub, pre smoking ban.

Now all it has done is have hoards of people smoking outside & the smoke creeping in through the open window & swirling around the air with no smoke extracter on.

I am all for the ban to be fair, however if we want to get down to the nitty gritty. Fat peeps & ugly peeps effect my health. They put me off my food. A girl could get anorexic.

I wish people would stop moaning about secondary smoke inhalation. Dont walk past pubs or infact just stay in doors forever. A loose kerb can kill you too yer know.
