I generally don't tell people I write. I don't really have much to show for my writing efforts, so it wouldn't be a very interesting conversation. If I meet people who are into comedy then I'll namedrop Kevin Eldon and Steve Furst obviously.

The only people who know I write are basically your good selves on here, the two people who I consider closest friends have only the slightest knowledge that I try my hand at writing, it just doesn't come up in our conversations, we don't really have that in common. My family all being in Ireland are even less aware.
It's very abstract to talk about writing to someone else that doesn't write, then there's the working class brought up in a council house me that thinks the whole idea of calling yourself a 'writer' is a bit poncey or 'getting ahead of yourself', where I was brought up, that sort of pursuit was practiced by 'other' people, that sort of lingers.
I do have a selection of hats.
