What does the Edinburgh Festival do for gigs?

So I've been wracking my brains over this for hours now, so I am just going to ask the boffins here:

I am a new stand-up (I unboxed myself last month) and have the option to flat-sit for a friend in London until September. So of course my prime motivation to do this is to be near so many performance opportunities and snaffle as many of them as I can in a short span.

Now I know many middling and veteran comedians pop to Scotland for the festival for many weeks during August, but I was wondering what effect that mini-migration has on comedy in the rest of the country, especially the cities? Does that mean clubs take on more hatchlings because of the talent depletion, or does the scene down south simply dry up for about a month? Does it have any effect at all?

I am open to both erudite experience and wild speculation.

Thanks!

London?

Very little the London stand up circuit is like a massive restless ants nest

It never sleeps

Personally, as a professional comedian who can't afford to go to Edinburgh, I find that during August I can pick up all sorts of gigs that I probably wouldn't get during the rest of the year.

Some gigs don't bother running during August, they take a summer break, but there are still plenty which run throughout the summer, especially in London.

On the subject of performing in Edinburgh I'm looking at the header (no, not that one, that's a different thread) offering a £100 advertising deal for Fringe shows. Is £100 too little to spend on advertising though, given how much you spend on everything else and how vital it is? Anyone signed up?

Are you heading up there?

I thought Edinburgh was a bit of a dead zone these days if you weren't established?

No.

Isn't this advertising meant to help you get established?
