Robin Askwith starred in the film as he was an established film star and more bankable for the distributors who were backing it.

And they got it right imo. He was excellent in this, much more comedic than the TV Mike could've been. Askwith was a criminally under used comedy actor with an expressive face and great at being an idiot. Would've suited the Carry Ons had he been a bit older.

Possibly so because I've read elsewhere that James was a bit of a stickler for rehearsing and then doing scenes only as they had rehearsed. Apparently he hated it when better actors than him like Dale and Williams would do their flourishes on a film take and he'd mess it up because it threw him off his cue. He was one of those actors couldn't do anything off script evidently.
