Guidelines for submitting stuff to Purple Comedy
Hi Folks,
I’m looking for radio sketches for my comedy Podcast Purple Comedy. We’ve been on the go for over a year now and we get about 1500 listeners a week from all over the world. Michael Monkhouse put me on to this site.
We welcome sketches and material for inclusion in the show. We'll let you know if we can use what you send. If you don't get on please don't think you are crap or we are bastards, to be fair, we are bastards but we only put stuff on we think is funny and that's a question of taste.
You can send us scripts or recorded material, on mp3.
Please bear the following in mind.
Listen to us first so you know what we sound like.

We are a radio show so no visual gags.
Only 2/3 actors.
No racist or homophobic stuff, we'll bin it.
Keep it short, 2 mins is about right.
Try and keep it simple, no dolphins the studio was soaked last time.
Word files attached to an email preferably.
Send about 3 sketches first time.
I don’t know if I’ll get loads of stuff sent so if I don’t get back to you don’t worry.

Sorry I should have said, and before anyone asks, no I can't pay. All i can offer is the fame, the women, the drug fuelled hell, the despair, the depression the years in the wilderness and finally, after all that, a part in Holby city.

It's not much but it's the way out most cutting edge writers take these days.

Honestly? I don't think this kind of thing is going to get you famous.

But if you have time, you should try and contribute to every opportunity and write on demand rather than treat your pieces like great works that only major broadcasters should see (even if they are), as writing on demand is what you'll have to do when eventually you do 'make it'. Also it's good to support others who are starting out in comedy.

However if your time is limited, I guess you should concentrate on big competitions.

I'd like to have ago, to hear my material being performed, somewhat professionally.

That's another good point - if they like it and perform it you could even put together a showreel of your stuff, which would be very cool.

Don't get me wrong I'm not against it, it's just useful to hear the views of others. As you say, time is limited, not all of us can throw effort at everything.

It saddens me slightly that he doesn't say whether your work gets a credit or not and I assume the 1,500 punters don't get the podcast for free, so where does the money go, clearly not to the writers, eh? Or maybe it is a free podcast, in which case they need to build it up before they can make money out of it which is fair enough. Or maybe they just do it for fun and to get exposure to themselves as performers. It's all interesting stuff isn't it?

And it is another potential shop window, as you say, better than having sketches in the drawer and it would be probably be a good exercise to try and get some material accepted.

Worth a listen to see what others are up to, as well.

I suppose I better answer a few questions. The Podcast is free, we don't make any money out of it and it will always be free. I have had lots of offers out of it though, some paid some not. Everyone who gets on the show will get a credit. If you have a website we'll add a link. We are not trying to rip anyone off.

Will it make us famous? Who knows. TV companies do trawl Podcasts for talent, that much I know.

It's a hell of a lot of fun, and we have leard a lot from doing it. My writing is way better than it was. There is a big difference between writing something and actually turning it into a show. It's good experience.

I have a lot of sketches already recorded and semi professionally edited which I used for Student Radio, would there be any issues with the fact they've already been proadcast?

Proadcast was a typo, but I like the way it sounds like a cross between broadcast and podcast.

I can vouch for John and all at Purple Comedy. The Slaggs have had a few sketches aired with them and we had our first live show under the Purple Comedy banner.
