I have read The Serious Guide To Joke Writing and The Comic Tool Box and found them both useful for jokes, sketches and longer scripts. Does any one know of similar books that tackle short stories/novel writing? The best thing I took from the above book was techniques to break the writing process down to make it appear smaller and would love something similar for prose
If you put "how to write" in the search field at Amazon, it brings up loads of books on the subject of novels and/or prose in general. Hope that helps. 
Although not about writing comedy, I found Stephen Kings book quite useful, I think it was called 'on writing' but you'll find it on amazon or whatever
