Hilary Mantel on Kate Middleton Page 6

Just because you'd never heard of her, Kipper, does not make her some obscure unknown!

'not a good way to keep a dull and quiet life (which is in reality the norm for a typical writer)'
I am choking somebody dial 999. :)

I'd heard of her briefly, book lovers had certainly heard of her since her double Booker win but still the wider world hadn't really. Now they have. Now they will be be intrigued and I suspect more will buy her books and many many more will Google her, and thus her name and her face will be a little better known and her obituary when it comes, a little longer. Fame is very seductive.

How can you hear of someone briefly?

Whilst watching arts and news progs on the telly and radio. 'HM wins book prize, HM's latest book...'

Alfred's just narked his book,

"F**k you darkie Churchill was a nazi"

only won the Richard and Judie book award. Narrowly beating Marc P's
"where did I leave my pants last night?"

What you meant to say was then that you knew a little about her, but only what you have heard from brief mentions of her on the radio and in the arts programmes you watch.

Which would make my posts even longer than they are. Flawed or not, I'll stay with what I put, thanks all the same. :) Around about December was it, the Booker fuss was all about, and her perky acceptance speech was played and I thought then 'Here's one we'll hear more of'. And it's only Feb.

It's not about being longer it is about saying what you mean and giving us an understanding of how you come to your idiosyncratic take on things. Context, after all given this very debate, is everything old bean. :)

It was said just how I wanted, thanks. I'm sure you don't usually object to colloquialisms when chatting to friends etc. It's what they're for, for cutting down on longer sentences. October it was, still only four months.

If she carries on like this, she put herself out of the running for the next Booker...

You can't really intellectualise envy and jealousy, these are strong primal feelings that exist in us all, and are heightened in the female of our species.

I can't believe I'm reading this. Has there been some sort of scientific study which proves women are more susceptible to jealousy than men? If so, please give details. Meanwhile I can only think of the large number of men I've known who've been jealous of other people's career success, other people's writing success, the successes of other men's children ... the list is endless.

I'd tell you but I'd just make you jealous.
