Hilary Mantel on Kate Middleton Page 4

Yes I read Mad occasionally in the 70s, very good mag.

But yes I see where the head shaking ladies on this thread are coming from, it's bad form to mock a person's looks. But it's also bad form to condemn a person's personality, which is what she did, to a person who is pretty much powerless to speak back.

Ofcourse she's been 'selected' for her blandness, look what's happened when they've gone for personality, as in Fergie, she caused a right old stir in the royal teacup. There seemed no reason whatsoever to me to openly attack her this way other than innate female jealousy of one woman having or being what she hasn't or isn't - KM is very photogenic and she's now having children. This rant was just unnecessary spite of the highest order. I really think she's suffering from severe hubris following her great literary success.

I will however now probably buy her Wolf Hall to read, after the awards hype failed to pull me in, so I also firmly believe there is a bit of marketing psychology behind this too.

nb having found at Mandrill is 60 how much bottox has she had?

And you know what I really believe Wills and Kate chose each other. Ok she's a possibly annorexic, hoochy koochy who apparently wondered around a freezing cold Scottish University in her underwear. To trap the jug eared bore-monster. But you know what good for her I suspectthat's as close to true love as anyone gets these days.

This thread is so depressing. The Daily Mail pulls your cock and you all dance.

Hilary Mantel didn't launch a 'scathing attack' on anyone. Neither did she 'rant' about anything. Her remarks about Kate were made in a lecture about 'Royal Bodies', given at the British Museum, wherein she discussed the bodies of Marie Antoinette as well as Henry the Eighth and Anne Boleyn in the context of public ownership and purposing.

She actually warns against 'sacrificing' Kate to media and the Daily Mail piece would be hilarious in it's misunderstandings if it wasn't so poisonous and anti-intellectual.

You lot chiming in with your Hilary Mantel's ugly/jealous/no-one to talk schtik are showing that you have no minds of your own and even no minds.

nb the Daily Mail absolutely served her.

Yep, what he said, but less cutting.

The Mail should at least have read beyond the first paragraph, frankly. It's lazy journalism cos nothing else is going on. The lecture is actually a brilliant piece of writing that is compelling for something that is not prose, and is a great example of why she is such a good writer.

What it's actually illustrated is that the world is split into two: the idiots who haven't read the article and the people who've read it and understand. To be honest, I think you'd have to be a right moron to not see what she's saying! Including Cameron and Miliband, who should both know better.

That said, she's not replying as it's good publicity and she knows she'll sell books off it. And frankly deserves to.

Chip -- Wolf Hall is brilliant. It's a slog, but well worth it, if you want a recommendation for one of her books.

What about the people who haven't read the article at all?

In that case, you should just "make stuff up".

Bollocks. How do you I put a third dimension on this Venn diagram?

If you're asking to see balls collide I can recommend some websites...

Someone did or didn't say something mean about a Royal, hey? Well, well.

To the blokes here commenting on Hilary Mantel's appearance, why not look up her endometriosis? And then perhaps feel ashamed?

Yes!

As for all this women's jealousy crap - would we also be accused of that if we had a go at a MALE who married into royalty ... I always felt Mark Phillips was a bit of a chinless wonder.

That's very cruel to all of us dyslexics and dyspraxics.

I ended up looking a chimney.

No, Miranda and Some Mothers is unfair to us dyspraxics. Long words aren't.

Actually three, there are also those of us who haven't read the article, do not intend to, and have no opinion on the matter whatsoever.
