I loved it
Vicious - Series 1 Page 5
Didn't amuse at all. Won't bother again.
Sorry, I didn't rate that. From the hype of the last few weeks I was expecting a really good script. It really wasn't. Lots of old hat gags that wouldn't get much laughter outside a TV studio. All the heavy laughing I found a bit gushy.
Wasn't all bad, a couple of goodish lines and McKellen was excellent but it was going over old ground mainly I thought. It felt like I was watching GGG from 15 years ago at times. It was a disappointment after all the positive feedback about it. I think it'll have a fair following maybe, considering its subject but I doubt this will win much praise from the critics. I don't see how they can savage TWW and then be nice about this. (Unless it is Elton they're after.)
A cosy 70s sitcom feel, sparkling dialogue and watching those two masters hamming it up in their element has me hooked from the off.
So I'm not alone. It was typically ITV and not even the great Ian McKellen could save it. Derek Jacobi was too clichéd.
(Yes I'm trying to watch it on ITV + 1 to give it a fair opinion but still not amused.)

Aren't they new to the sitcom game? Maybe that's why they act a bit OTT...because they're used to it from the classical stage acting.
I liked the line about Graham Norton being straight.

They're playing a couple of ageing theatrical queens and having a ball with it, you could see them holding in the laughter.
I thought their large performances suited the show.

Take it easy. First we have to watch the 2nd episode.
Well I loved it, over the top, and very funny. It has a slight 70s feel, but that's alright by me. These characters will grow and gain nuance in the hands of such brilliant actors. It was good knock about stuff. I thought Frances De La Tour stole the show. It won't be to everyone's taste but I really enjoyed it.
It was, in some respects, an outrageous nod to traditional British sitcoms, but eschewed the knowing winks of Miranda and the crudity of Mrs Brown's Boys to challenge for the title of 'King of Retro Britcoms' with some ease. The writers, no doubt, feel just as indebted to the actors as they are for the deftly written script, but the most unbelievable thing is: it's on ITV. I look forward to the rest.
Quote: Gordon Bennett @ April 29 2013, 9:12 PM BSTI missed the first 2 minutes. How was the theme tune (if it has one)?
If only there was a website that provided such useful information.

She just played the Miss Jones part again. Didn't we have enough of that in the 70s?
Quote: Vince Ives @ April 29 2013, 9:57 PM BSTI used to think team written sitcoms US-style were the answer to whatever's wrong with this country's comedic output, but apparently that's how Trollied was created so clearly the problems run deeper than that.
The problem is the system. There is plenty of more than capable talent. If they continue to run sitcom down, however, there won't be for much longer.

Quite!
Interesting to see a number of comments above that the look of the show was reminiscent of Rising Damp. I thought exactly the same, but wasn't entirely sure if I was being influenced by Frances de la Tour's role.
Channel snobs
