The conductor Karen Gibson - it was here worst nightmare, as it happens - black skin tones are a bastard to paint, especially in oils.
Ah, all the paintings of her were great! And the ones of Gyles were pretty good. I wasn't as impressed by the three paintings of the other woman.
Agreed. The young girl was too pretty - always hard to paint because the beauty is all on the surface and anything less than a photographic likeness feels like it's failed. Alice would have preferred Giles - and would have made better job of it I think. Still - it was lovely to get through to the heats - they looked at thousands of paintings. The odd thing is, she isn't really a portrait artist - her stuff's a bit more 'odd'.
Ooh, I really like her stuff. Odd is good. Straightforward portraiture can be pretty boring, to be honest.
