What are you watching on TV? Page 1,059

Countdown with Dr Phil Hammond in dictionary corner this week. That bastard gets all the medical comedian gigs. Angry

Big recommendation for anyone who has never seen it and who has the Sky movie channels... Tonight on 'Sky Classics' they are showing Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, a really funny (and somewhat dark & tragic) movie adaptation of the play, directed by Mike Nichols (the year before he made The Graduate). Stars ol' Burton and Taylor as George and Martha. If you haven't ever caught this then it really is well worth a look. :)

With Nicholas 'Put the bunny down' Cage?

That's the bunny.

I watched Bruno last night. Cringed all the way through (did laugh too in some places). It could have been more satrical and because some bits are obviously scripted and set up, it lessened, IMO, the bits where people are making idiots of themselves.

The show on Ch4 last night with Frank Skinner interviewing Russell Brand.

I've never been a fan of Brand but this served to show what a f**king shallow, fame chasing, self-serving unfunny turd he really is. And as for his entourage. Jeez!

Why does no-one ever mention his series all those years ago on the Paramount Comedy Channel, when he wanked off a gay bloke in a pub toilets and took a tramp home to have a bath with him? Why is that never mentioned, eh? Whistling nnocently

The Opposite of Sex on DVD. Excellent funny film with satellite dish faced Christina Ricci. And the best use of a narrator since Sunset Boulevard.

Is that where you and Leevil got the idea? ;)

Consider it mentioned.

Actually, I wonder if that's where Charlie Brooker and Chris Morris got the idea of Dan wanking off a builder in the toilet in Nathan Barley - under the guise of "investigative journalism"... Because that's what Brand's series was meant to be about - him "challenging his preconceptions and prejudices" - hence he wanked off a gay bloke in the gents. He also did one where he "confronted racism" - which basically involved him getting in a hissy fit with some skinhead England fans. Knob. Apart from the fact I don't find him particularly funny, he sort of puts forwards this agenda that it's OK to be completely self-obsessed so long as you're somewhat self-aware about it and spout off enough hippy bollocks at the same time.

There's also something terribly superficial about his use of language. It isn't enough for him to use certain words, he has to emphasis the fact that he uses them.

It's the modern curse of irony. Providing you can do it "ironically" that's okay then.

It's a case of 'The Emperor's New Clothes' with him. The flowery language and vague references to the arts I suspect hide a deeply ignorant and superficial person. I don't think there's much to him beyond the persona, frankly. He's the eternal 2nd year university student, impressive to the Freshers, but...

Thesedays, Joseph Goebbels would have put an ironic spin on the National Socialist's propaganda, no doubt.

I missed this content and forgot to SKY+ it; can I access it somewhere else? Or will it be repeated this week?

Mr Brand was at his best on Big Brother's Little Brother. I used to make a point of watching that, and no other part of the BB 'circus', nor have I been interested in any other part of his career.

I remember that. It was on UK Play and was called RE:Brand. It was quite amusing, if not a bit weird. There was also an episode where he tried to get off with a granny.

Anyway, I really like Brand. Sure he's a bit of a tit, but what celeb isn't in someway?

I liked RE:Brand too!
And he was extremely funny on the Big Brother companion show. His act worked perfectly on that.
