Parenthetical questions.

Hello.

(1) Do you use parenthesis in spec scripts or should they only be used in shooting scripts?

(2) Is it possible to over use parenthesis in scripts?

cheers peeps...

You can use parenthesis in spec scripts, but use them only when absolutely necessary. For instance, this is absolutely pointless:

DAVID:
(ANGRILY) I swear to God if I hear another wannabe writer asking a dumb question about motherf**king parenthesis I will shit on all twenty four of his disciples' balls!!!

But this is probably worth a punt:

DAVID:
(SARCASTICALLY) This question of yours is really fresh, Nigel, have a cookie!

I kid, I kid, you're alright!

Cheers Dave, my question has been answered in a nut shell.

NIGEL
(SARCASTICALLY)
yeah, thanks... :P

No worries, Nigel, I live to give.

LEE
(SHAKING HEAD)
Yet, you still use it incorrectly!

Actually they are often called Wrylies, due to novice writer's frequent use as in:

BILL
(wryly) Parenthetical mood markers are frequently misused.

I hate people who say (1), (2) and (3) when they should say 1), 2) and 3).

It's as if Nigel doesn't understand parenthesis...

Parenthesis - something prepared by genealogy students...
