Online platform for amateur stand-up comedians?

Hello

I swear this is not a promotional copy-past text, I am here for some feedback on a site I am building for comedians.

This is an online platform for comedians, and much as I hate online versions of everything acting like it can replace the real thing (concerts, sports, social networking, flirting, etc.)- it is sometimes welcome addition to the real thing!

In a nutshell, just like YouTube has made everyone a movie producer with a platform to showcase their talent, this is an audio version of it, but exclusive to comedy. Simple. open mic, open to everyone all the time.

Do you think it's a good idea? As far as I know, it's unique and a first. Would you go online on your ipad and listen to comedy on this site in the bus?

Would it be a problem if it does not have video?( I for one always put standup comedy on and do my chores while listening to it - like radio)

Do you agree with me that initially it should be invite-only to keep content quality high?

Any feedback is very welcome. We are looking to launch on March 1st and the address is funnymic.com

Write to us at info@funnymic.com (we are accepting content already)

cheers
Tavish

Love this idea I am an amateur comic looking for platforms such as this bring it on I say

Thank you for your feedback. I am not your average computer geek (am a motorcycle engg) and this is a little pet project so it really helps to get feedback from people such as yourself.

At the moment, we are looking for content so feel free to send some audio files our way! Ideally something that will catch someone's attention instantly.. that way I'd be happy to put your clip and name(contact details if you want) on our introductory homepage.

I would argue what you are trying to create already exists with the present solution and the problem in both cases is promotion.

You can upload a comedy album through a third party entity that deals with itunes. However nobody is going to see it even if you are a genius because nobody is going to search for your material without promotion.

So to create a new platform you would just be providing comedy but you would not have enough promotional power to make it work.

Interesting insight Glen.

However, The site you mention and similar ones (I really like cracked.com) generate content in various forms. You cannot go in and find a comedian's contact details and hire him if you like something. It's a more generic site and most content is based on stuff that already exists.

It's not focused on the art of making people laugh with your voice and your voice only, which is quite a fine art if you ask me.

Yes, its not revolutionary but successful things seldom are. They're usually evolution with tweaks and changes on existing ideas.

I do agree with you that the promotion bit is difficult, to get the audience-content cycle started. However, like I said this is a serious effort and we will be doing promotion to the maximum of our ability.

Thank you again..

I've been writing jokes for a few years now but haven't performed open mike yet, probably due to anxiety. So if I said yes this is a genuis idea go on Dragons Den with it you would be a fool to take my advice. However the website does sound like a good idea, I don't know anything about your competition or the available market for it. But I personally would send in an audio or video performance to you. I've just joined this site today so if you reply and I don't see your message of forget to check back on my thread here is my e-mail in case you wish to contact me directly.
