Nick agree with you re: Spaced is excellent but I too found Shaun of the Dead lame and plot weak. It was so bad (imo) that I haven't even bothered to look up Hot Fuzz.
It's odd because if I like Spaced, I assume I'm going to like SOTD.

You should watch Hot Fuzz just for the pleasure of Timothy Dalton's 'tache and Paddy Considine. Or watch the trailers and make your mind up.
Spaced's main problem is that it's dated terribly. It's so 1999.

I bought both series a good few weeks ago. I watched the first series and thought it was great. i watched the second and thought it was perfect. I thought it was clever how they did the Matrix parody personally. I like to see how much the director was influenced by other films/shows. Especially if one shares similar influences. One of my favourites being the parody of Robocop in one of the episodes. I thought that was a stroke of genius.
Edgar Wright loves the Evil Dead series and John Carpenter so you can see the influence.
But i don't think it's really that dated. The only time i think that is when you see them on payphones. It holds up, imo.

The style has dated. And the music obviously.
On the big screen it (as in, Wright's and Pegg's style) seems that bit fresher but what was a cutting edge show, now just looks a bit 'trendy'. If that makes sense.
Still, very funny though and a great show.

Anything that (hateful buzzwords are a-coming)reflects the zeitgeist of people in their mid-20s approaching the millennium at a certain time is bound to look dated 9 years on. It's a very specific piece.
I'll never look at Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in in the same way ever again.

That's fair enough. But I don't think the show itself has.

When I watch it I can believe that it's happening right now, I'm not thinking of it as being stuck in the past.
I think your right Zooo, the show for me has aged well. Some of the elements are as relavent now as back then
Because it has so many references, that's the only think that dates it.
It's still as cool and slick as it ever was and will be.
Spaced is one of the all time great Brit sitcoms; I just love that show, great characters, performances and scripts-and always so much going on within each episode. I love both series, but I personally think series two is even better than the first. Its just such a well written and rich show that puts most sitcoms to shame. Im also a big fan of the two films the group have done, no other british comedians are producing such great films, and films that cross over to the American market aswell as just here. Its a shame they didnt do a third series of Spaced, or a new show all together, but TVs loss is cinemas gain. I always thought Steve Coogan and his regular writers might break out into the film world, and although I personally quite liked the Parole Officer, you can easilly see why they didnt, it was just not on the same level as Pegg and cos offerings; and this is coming from a huge Coogan fan. Their film just seemed too unambitious and small, Wright and Pegg really grasped what could be done with the film medium. Someone else who I would love to really have a good whack at making a full length feature would be Chris Morris, just imagine the sort of insane flick he could produce if at full throttle.
I agree with people who say its aged well. The playstation is the biggest aged thing lol.
