Music

How would you put in a script that a certain song is playing in the background? It could be for example at a party, like in The Office, when Dawn leaves the music is Take That - Back For Good. Or it could be a montage of clips with a song to it. How is that edited in a script? Hope that makes sense!

Unless it's really important to the plot i don't think readers care to be honest. But in a script i wrote it went something like this...

The Isley Brothers, “Shout” comes through the speakers at ferocious red levels.

There's also a scene in Spaced where Tim holds a stereo high above his head. It's kind of like this...

Tom holds a boombox high above his head with both hands. It is playing Take That's, "Back For Good."

It shows attention to detail, and how the background affects what's going on in the foreground. The same as you might have a pathetic fallacy, where it is raining when something bad is happening. So it may not be important to the plot, but adds a layer to the piece, and shows thought has been put in into how to improve it with minor additions.

One view is you can put anything you want in, others say it is the director's decision, budgets etc I presume.

In terms of formatting, I checked the Office scripts and they just put the song in apostrophes and said who by.
